New Suzuki Jimny Proves SUVs Can Be Both Cute And Manly

Too Manly Fuller Hair Fibers Before, After

The all-new, 2019 Suzuki Jimny is proof that an SUV can be both cute and masculine.

Now in its fourth generation, the tiny Jimny puts on an even boxier sheetmetal than the previous model, featuring squared off proportions with nearly no arched lines. The slab-sided design makes it look tougher than its diminutive size would suggest and gives it a marked resemblance to the much more expensive Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

An available two-tone styling package adds a black grille, lower fascia, and roof, further accentuating the boxy appearance.

The interior manages to somehow seat four and reminds us a lot of the Jeep Wrangler. It’s utilitarian but is available with some nice creature comforts, such as a sizable touchscreen infotainment system, keyless push-button start, air conditioning, cruise control, and a multifunction steering wheel.

The new Jimny is cute largely because it’s a pint-sized boxy SUV trying to look big and imposing, but the fact that it’s a proper off-road vehicle also makes it very manly.

Engineers employed a ladder frame that’s boxed and cross-braced for serious durability and rigidity, solid axels, a selectable low range, and a serious part-time four-wheel-drive transfer case. There is no faking it with this rugged little off-roader.

While a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder with a measly 100 horsepower leaves much to be desired — don’t expect a V6 and a V8 would be nearly half the car’s size — the rest of the Jimny is solid. It even has the area of safety covered, offering such modern features as a forward collision warning and braking system that uses sensors and cameras to apply emergency braking when approaching obstacles at “too high of speed.”

Rugged, capable, versatile, comfortable, relatively safe, and likely very fuel efficient — the new Suzuki Jimny is the very definition of rugged substance jammed-packed into a tiny box on wheels. It’s a poor man’s Jeep Wrangler, which itself is a poor man’s Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but so what? It’s got spunk!
