The venerable Ferrari 458 Italia has reached the end of the road, and its successor — the 488 GTB — is a much better performance machine all around.

Developed to take on the Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 650S, the 488 GTB packs a 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out 660 horsepower and 560 lb-ft. (760 Nm) of torque, making it notably more powerful than the 597 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. (540 Nm) the 458 generates from its naturally-aspirated 4.5L V8.

All that power is sent to the rear wheels by an updated seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a Variable Torque Management system and a reprogrammed gear ratio that help deliver “incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle,” allowing the Italian supercar to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3 seconds, to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 8.3 seconds before capping out at 205 mph (330 km/h).

Ferrari’s engineers modified the exhaust system to deliver a “full, clear and totally distinctive” soundtrack.

Visually, the 488 GTB is clearly a 458 with a much more aggressive body, one characterized by a large air intake scallop that pays homage to the original 308 GTB, a wider front spoiler, a new blown spoiler that improves downforce, and active flaps on the diffuser. Restyled LED taillights give the rear end a more menacing look.

The interior remains largely unchanged from the 485’s, though benefits from new satellite control clusters, a slightly revised instrument panel, angled air vents and an improved infotainment system with a more user-friendly interface. The redesigned sport seats provide better support.

The Ferrari 488 GTB made its world debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and is currently available for purchase. Do you consider it a fitting successor to the 458 Italia? Do the Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 650S have something to be worried about? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
