BMW M2 Coupe Races Into Action With 365HP

The much-anticipated BMW M2 Coupe has been unveiled, having made its world debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show with a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine that produces 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm.

Donning an attractive Long Beach Blue paint job (Alpine White, Mineral Grey, and Black Sapphire can also be had), the M2 sits atop the 2 Series lineup and is the spiritual successor to the beloved 1 Series M Coupe. It might even be what the latest M3/M4 should have been performance-wise.

The turbo six makes 343 pound-feet of torque (369 lb-ft. when the overboost function is activated) from 1,400 to 5,560 rpm in addition to the aforementioned 365 horses, allowing the 3,450-pound (1565 kg) German sports car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds on route to the a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) when equipped with the standard manual transmission.

Opting for the seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox reduces the sprint time to 4.2 seconds, while an available M Driver’s Package can bump top speed to 168 mph (270 km/h).

Other performance highlights include aluminum front/rear axles, a sport-tuned suspension with components sourced from the BMW M3/M4, an M-prepared electronic power steering system, and an Active M Differential.

Stopping power is provided by larger (relative the set on the regular 2 Series) vented & perforated discs paired to four- and two-piston calipers.

Visually, the M2 sets itself apart from the 2 Series with a more aggressive-looking body kit featuring a deep front bumper with three large air dams, new side skirts, flared fenders, a discreet trunk-mounted spoiler, and a new rear bumper with an integrated air diffuser and quad exhaust tips.

BMW claims the body kit reduces drag by up to five percent and lift by 35 percent.

The BMW M2 is produced at BWM’s factory in Leipzig, Germany. North American sales are expected to begin in April 2015, with prices in the United States starting at $51,700 plus destination & handling.

There’s no word on how many units will made, but total production should surpass that of the 1 Series M Coupe. Would you choose it over an M3/M4?
