It’s always the same story, isn’t it? Every New Year’s celebration, you drink yourself silly and wake up the next morning with a hangover so excruciating you vow never to drink again.

While that’s a promise you likely won’t keep, a new scientific study has confirmed that not drinking for at least a month can do wonders for your body and may actually make you want to drink less.

In the study, which was published in the journal Health Psychology, 857 British men and women were asked to not drink any alcohol for 31 days as researchers assessed the benefits of their sobriety.

While 36 percent of the participants caved in, those who managed to abstain for the full duration actually tended to drink less often after the completion of the study.

This goes to show that if you adhere to a strict no drinking policy for at least a month, you are more likely to abstain from alcohol in the future.

Life probably won’t be as fun, but you will have a healthier liver, lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of getting diabetes.

The results of this study are definitely something to keep in mind the next time you pop open that beer can. Take it easy on the booze, guys.
