Imagine being a first-time dad that is forced to choose between abandoning your newborn baby and keeping your wife… what would you do? While most of us will never be put in that spot, one man was forced to make the heartbreaking decision.
Baby boy Leo (pictured above) came into this world with Down syndrome, a condition that would handicap him for life. When daddy Samuel Forrest was given an ultimatum by his ashamed wife to either abandon the child or divorce her, he chose his beloved son.
Wifey Ruzan refused to attach herself to Leo when he was born and even refused to touch him. She didn’t want anything to her first child, but Samuel saw him as “beautiful” and “perfect”.
Ruzan is from Armenia, a country where doctors present you with the option of keeping or abandoning (institutionalizing) a newborn with autism, while Samuel is from New Zealand, a country with more appreciation for such children. It’s a clash between cultures and customs, but one cannot ignore the personal component…
He told ABC News the following:
“They took me in to see him and I looked at this guy and I said, he’s beautiful, he’s perfect and I’m absolutely keeping him.
What happens when a baby like this is born here, they will tell you that you don’t have to keep them
My wife had already decided, so all of this was done behind my back.”
Thanks to an outpouring of support on Kickstarter, Samuel has raised enough money to move back to New Zealand with Leo and pay for his special education needs. What a beautiful world we live in…
What would you do if you were given such an ultimatum?
