It’s time you found yourself a good men’s cologne that you wear regularly.
The power of fragrance and the impact it can have on a man’s life cannot be overlooked. Not only is fragrance an invisible part of our personal style, but it also has a powerful effect on how people see and remember us.
As a man, having a signature scent can offer numerous benefits, including making you more attractive to women and feel more confident and less stressed in life. And yet, I never considered finding mine until I was 34, believing that my natural manly scent and a decent deodorant was all I needed!
The old me wasn’t alone in not understanding the importance of having a signature scent, seeing as over 80% of men do not wear fragrance on a regular basis, if at all! Why is that?
Could it be a lack of basic information and education on the significance of fragrance? In the West, men were traditionally introduced to the practice by a father or other male role model; however, the unfortunate epidemic of broken families and single-mother households has left most men today with little or no direction on the subject.
Additionally, I think there is still a stigma against men wearing cologne in American and possibly elsewhere around the world. Men who smell too good can sometimes be mocked and shamed as walking trophies of vanity.
Fortunately, the benefits of wearing fragrance far outweigh the cons, so here are 10 reasons why you and every other man should have his own signature scent.
1. Makes You More Attractive To Women
At 150,000 times more sensitive than our vision, smell is our most powerful sense. Not only that but woman have a much stronger sense of smell than men, and they use this advantage to great effect.
A European study found that while men rely mostly on visual cues when choosing a woman, scent is the most powerful factor for women in choosing a man. In other words, we use our eyes first and foremost and they use their nose.
There is nothing more irresistible to a woman than a masculine manly smell, and that’s because their nose is specifically tuned to be sensitive to male pheromones (scented sex hormones). Having a signature scent that works well with your natural manly scent can form an even more memorable and attractive olfactory experience for your wife, girlfriend or the woman you are after.
2. Foster Deeper Emotional Connections With People
Not only is smell our most powerful sense, but it’s also the sense most closely linked to memory. Our nose can detect over a trillion unique odors, dwarving the estimated 7,000,000 colors that our itty bitty eyes can comprehend.
The olfactory bulb, which receives neural input about the odours detected by our nose, is directly connected to the limbic system (the “emotional brain,” as it is sometimes called), explaining why smell triggers memories better than any of our other senses. Simply put, the more power and distinctive a scent, the deeper our emotion connection.
I’m sure you have at least one fond or not-so fond memory that is triggered by a particular smell. For many people, the smell of ginger bread cookies in the middle of summer elicits a strong feeling of Christmas, whereas just seeing but not smelling the cookies has half that effect, if any at all.
Having a signature scent make its easier for people to remember you even when you’re not around. It can dictate the images, emotions, and memories evoked in the brain of anyone who smells it, be it on you or on someone else.
3. Makes You Feel More Confident, Appear Sharper
It’s a well known fact that dressing well can increase your confidence, but did you know that smelling good can enhance that feeling?
A little bit of men’s perfume or cologne can even go a long way to raise your self-confidence in the eyes of women. In an experiment involving college students at Liverpool University, women consistently rated men wearing scented antiperspirant as more attractive than those without scented antiperspirant (the ‘body odor’ group), even when just watching them on video
As it turns out, having the mere knowledge that they smelled good made the men wearing the scented antiperspirant feel good, and this made them look good to the women judges watching them on video.
Not only can a fancy attire make you look like a million bucks, but wearing a signature scent can make you smell like it too.
4. Improves Your Mood And Those Around You
Have you ever walked into room and suddenly feeling calm and at ease after taking in its aroma? If yes, you’re not alone. Certain scents have a calming effect, which is why baby powder smells the way it does.
Studies have found that lavender essential oil has an effect similar to diazepam, a popular anti-anxiety medication, while jasmine has long been used as an antidepressant.
If these scents have such powerful effects on mood, it’s not far-fetched to assume that some perfumes and cologne also have mood-improving properties.
5. Can Break Down Barriers
A good scent, especially one that meshes well with your personality, can start a conversation. It becomes part of the room and occupies a very real space in the social dimension.
With a scent you can catch the most composed individual off guard, whether male or female. You can provoke or withhold response.
Scents can even shape, reshape, and challenge preconceived notions of femininity and masculinity. As a man, have you considered wearing women’s perfume for their subtlety and possibly even to get more in touch with your feminine energy?
Why not? If a scent that’s supposedly assigned to another gender suits you, nothing should stop you from wearing it. After all, isn’t that the very definition of a signature scent?
It should now be apparent the importance your scent carries in the world and why every man should have his own signature scent.
A good scent will make you more attractive to women and help form lasting impressions. A good scent can improve your mood, break down barriers by being a conversation-starter, and make you feel more confident.
Applying for a job or auditioning for a big role? A quality signature scent can help you stand out from the crowd and give you a competitive edge over the ignorant men unfortunate enough to not have a signature scent of their own.
Remember, whatever smell you exude can make or break how people see you, so it’s necessary that you take active control of your scents and odors. Regardless if you are still on the quest for your signature scent or if you have already found one, never underestimate the power of smell and never stop searching for a scent that compliments you the best.
