We have seen many plane crashes, but never one as close as the ATR-72 twin-engine aircraft that crashed in Taipei, Taiwan on February 4, 2015.
As you can see in the following video, the commercial TransAsia flight dramatically crashed into a highway before ending up in a harbour. It had just taken off from a nearby airport and had 58 passengers onboard:
It’s surreal, isn’t it? Almost as if you were watching a scene from a blockbuster Hollywood action movie, with the pilot seemingly making a concerted effort to not crash into the highway.
According to reports, at least 23 people died in the plane crash, while numerous others were injured. Fortunately, many lives were saved.
The plane’s black boxes were recovered and recorded communications between the cockpit and the control tower. Apparently, the pilot called out “Mayday Mayday engine flameout” shortly after takeoff, leading experts to believe an engine failure.
It’s another sad day for aviation.
